Fresh Pressed: Trev Rich, FL, AP, Tommy Brown, Soul City, A.V.I.U.S., and more

fresh pressed

Hot singles, a plethora of videos, and a mixtape for good measure. Happy Friday, kids.   Trev Rich – “The Worst” Trev Rich puts his own flip on Jhene Aiko’s “The Worst.” You know the drill by now; metaphors, storytelling, and rewind worthy punchlines. Press play, listen, repeat. FL ft. AP – “Cameras” Produced by Fortune, Lana Del Rey haunts the hook while FL and AP set the scene; a winner’s circle surrounded by mean mugs and winking piano keys. Rolphy – “Let Me Go” Clocking in at only 2 minutes long, Rolphy fills the song to the brim with interpersonal ruminations. Tommy Brown – “Tatted and Paid” Tried and true material with some dynamic visuals. A.V.I.U.S. – “Be My Lady” This one is a great beat coupled with classic storytelling, set against a textural, albeit one dimensional video. Clydesdale Entertainment – “WP4L” I mean…it’s weed. The Soul Pros ft. Felix Fast4wrd & Edo. G – “Greatness” The video is ...

F.Lawless – Young Amsterdam

youngamsterdam

Young Amsterdam, FL’s latest release named after the budding weed culture in Colorado very much follows the tried and true procedural method of smoking herb. FL, fresh off the release of LIMBO last year, wasted no time and dropped Young Amsterdam on wildly appropriate 4/20. Yet there is not one thing about this project that feels rushed. Ideally crafted like a finely rolled blunt, from spark to roach the listening experience feels almost like the smooth smoke twisting and twirling into your lungs, each track inching you closer and closer to the euphoria you’re anticipating. The preparation begins over the Neon Brown produced intro, starting slow with a gradual uptick over a slow and deliberate cannabis friendly diatribe, the listener is given ample time to roll up. The second track, “Cameras” marks the first couple pulls on the stick, FL gets it really burning strong with the combination of gentle articulation and forceful language, passing to AP midway. The beat ...

The Precipice; FL talks Red Bull, Young Amsterdam, and more

1

The momentous energy that surrounds F. Lawless these days is palpable. He’s aligned himself with the upcoming summer season, snaking through block after city block with an onslaught of heat. He spoke with us about his recent membership in the Red Bull Sounds Select family (along with the equally unstoppable ReMINDers duo), his strategy behind his newly released project, and what else he has planned – spoiler, it’s more, and it’s sooner, than you’d expect.   So, congratulations are in order! You are officially a Red Bull Sound Select artist. What’s the story behind how that happened for you? Thank you!  So basically DJ Low Key has had a great relationship with Red Bull for the last few years.  They recently approached him to be a Local Denver curator for their Red Bull Sound Select Program.  Low Key has been a strong supporter of both foodchain, and my recent solo efforts, LIMBO and Young Amsterdam.  Beyond that Low Key is a super knowledgeable, dedicated DJ ...

Fresh Pressed: FL, Plat Maravich, Soul City, Kid Vegas, Aires Jackson, Catch Lungs, and more

fresh pressed

Singles, albums, and videos on videos. We had an unprecedented amount of submissions this week, so we chose some of our favorites. Which ones are you feelin’? FL – “Time” Beware the drop on this one. FL is at it again, and the Young Amsterdam 4:20 Mixtape is sounding like it might be everything we hoped for. Simply put, “Time” is trance-enducing, and FL’s voice has never sounded smoother. Plat Maravich ft. Smoove Quotes – “Baby James” The Yonnas produced beat is both abrupt and soul-infused, and Plat Maravich plays it to perfection with a nice addition from Smoove Quotes. Plat raps over this beat the way The Godfather of Soul used to perform over one- replete with high pitched vocal inflections and exclamatory delivery. Typhy, Ill Se7en, Panama Saweto – “Blazing Saddles” Mikey Fresh gave the Soul City boys a colorful, wild west backdrop with this beat, and the emcees filled in the scenery. The sound is filtered and relaxed, ...

Collective Culture – Culture Over Currency

cultureovercurrency

We first mentioned Collective Culture last week, and today they dropped their big project, the one they have been hyping for weeks. Culture Over Currency vol. 1 is a cypher with seven Colorado emcees (in order of appearance) FL, Turner Jackson, Trev Rich, Mr. Midas, Hustle Man, AP, and Koo Qua. The goal that Collective Culture had by bringing all these emcees together, many who rep separate crews, was to “promote Denver talent the way that we see fit.” Though the cypher has been done many times, The Culture Over Currency video still feels fresh. The visuals look good, filmed in a sweet location (Ink Monstr office) by knowledgeable film peeps (Jeremy Pape, Derek Reinhardt and Fa’al Yamin Ali) which makes for a professional appearance. The tight shots of the emcee’s mouths add dimension and the varied camera angles, even more depth. The sound on the other hand wasn’t quite as great. The lofty ceiling, empty office, or both caused ...

The Rap-A-Thon Class of 2013

rapathon2013

On August 30, 2013 history was made. Dozens of MCs congregated at The Savoy (2700 Arapahoe) to spit the longest non-stop cypher that Denver has ever seen (heard), and they did it. From 8 p.m. (sharp) to close to midnight, MCs rapped, periodically passing the mic to the next eager rhymer. From writtens to freestyles, we heard a lot of stories over the course of the night, but all of them legitimate, as novices and veterans alike each had their turn on the mic. The overall vibe of the evening matched the classy ambiance of The Savoy’s ballroom – beautiful. Like any yearbook session, many didn’t show up on picture day, but those that did offered their favorite line delivered that evening.   The emcee’s energy was palpable as they passed the mic around the cypher. Each emcee completely different from one another with the same passion and drive.           The party people were just as ...

Final Friday Presents: The Rap-a-thon

rap-a-thon

As summer is coming to a close, people are savoring the last few weekends of warm weather and innovative events. Final Friday Presents: The Rap-a-thon is a one-of-a-kind event taking place on Friday, August 30th at The Savoy (27th and Arapahoe). As one of the summer’s important close out shows, The Savoy, a premier ballroom in Curtis Park will be filled with dozens of MCs, a bunch of live painters and numerous vendors and local designers displaying and selling their wares. The idea of the rap-a-thon is to create the longest running rhyme cypher that Denver has ever heard. The event is hosted by Ru Black and Lizzy Brodie, and at 8 p.m., the  rappers will begin to spit. There are no rules other than keeping the cypher rolling.  DJs Dozen, Vacho and Squizzy Taylor will keep the beats hot while the MCs throw down. With over 50 rappers confirmed, there has never been an event like this. The list of heavy-hitters includes: ...

Yet another ridiculously prolific week in Colorado hip-hop. Instead of boring you with words, we’ll jump right in. Deca – “Breadcrumbs” Deca is an Colorado export, but he is still going hard and representing for the state. Check out his new video for his single “Breadcrumbs.” This really cool animated video completely complements the intriguing track. Directed and animated by Steven Mertens, Additional artwork by Deca, Scratches by DJ Stan Solo. Dos Beats – Sixteen Minutes This isn’t brand new, but we figured there was a chance you hadn’t heard it yet, so here’s your chance.
