Fresh Pressed: DJ Lazy Eyez, Tommy Brown, Ill Se7en, Aklock, Eddie Knolls, and more

fresh pressed

In today’s catch up edition we have a grip of new music, mostly singles, one mixtape and one EP. (We placed them in the order we thought they would be the most enjoyable to you, our beloved audience.) Tommy Brown – “Intro Music” The new track off Welcome to the D.O.P.E. Game player, Tommy Brown’s forthcoming project, Covered In Gold 24k definitely fits the assumed(though misleading) meaning of the collective. Trap to a tee, Tommy is definitely engaging, albeit repetitive.  “Intro Music” drops out mid way through and switches it up with beat and speed, which added an element of interest to the single. Ill Se7en – “New Jack City” In a complete change of pace, both on this playlist and for Ill Se7en, “New Jack City” features a crispy Mikey Fresh beat that forces the emcee to break out of his groove a bit. The joint is extremely likable and bears replaying, though the Nino Brown line at the end distracts from the uniqueness due to the familiarity from ...

Mikey Fresh Talks Soul City Studios

pic

Soul City Studios has been impossible to ignore lately. They’re headlining their own shows, occupying a supporting spot on national tours’ Denver stops, releasing singles, prepping for full projects, and generally becoming official in a way that is integral to any crew’s success. Mikey Fresh, the label’s CEO, producer, DJ, and backbone, sat down with us to talk about Soul City. Though humble to a fault, he’s undeniably proud of his brand and his crew. He spoke on the “fantasy team” he’s assembled, their sound, their collabs, and their future. Soul City has been kickin’ around for a minute, but you’ve made it official now with the Soul City Studios brand. What compelled you to take that next step? To make it official was more a business decision. We needed to make it an LLC and put it on the books. We wanted to be more professional about it and really brand it instead of just, “oh it’s all of ...

Fresh Pressed: Bullhead*ded, Jiggy Thompson, ProCyse, Fo Chief, Rhyme Pro and more

image

Big week in Colorado hip-hop, speaking of, have you checked out the Westword Music Award nominees yet? This time of year always creates the biggest stir in the community, but yet no one “cares,” and “it doesn’t matter.” We see y’all, but we love the acknowledgement of the talent in any form and from any source. That said, here’s some new tracks for the week, as always, a plethora. Bullhead*ded (prod. by Maulskull) – “Snuffed” Both Bullhead*ded and Maulskull have their own signature sounds and them together is solid. Jiggy Thompson featuring Bella Scratch – “Feels So Good” Here’s another from the Panama Soweto, Mikey Fresh collaboration, this time with Bella Scratch (yes, the DJ) on the hook. ProCyse and Fo Chief featuring Paul Junior- “Nite Lights” Dig. Rhyme Progression – “Bottom Of Her Barrel” Dude is fairly versatile, always surprising in a young cat. Don Blas  ( DJ MU$A y’all Niggas need Jesus rework) – “AMEN” DJ Musa’s remix of ...

Hip-Hop’s Backbone: Meet More Colorado DJs

djs

Our first DJ feature was about this time last year just after the DMC Regional Battle. The super ambitious article included interviews from 21 of Colorado’s favorite DJs. Because the 2014 DMC Regional Battle is just around the corner we decided that we should catch up with a few of the DJs that we missed last round. Spend a few minutes reading the informative, sometimes funny, always awesome responses from a few of the area deckmasters.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

When and how did you get your start DJing?  Well I had my first DJ setup (that old-school numark starter DJ kit, circa 2000 haha) when I was like 12 or some shit…But that shit just collected mad dust. I really started picking it back up again in like ’06 when my dude MIke sold me his rig for hella cheap with a TON of classic Nas, Wu, MObb Deep, GangStarr (east coast) type of singles. At that point is when I really feel I genuinely started to DJ and been at it ever since then! How’d you pick your name?  Man the first musician name I ever had was DJ SKreal…haha….but I always thought that shit was hella corny so I was always kind of searching for a new cool name that I really liked. Anyway people always used to say my shit was a breath of fresh air when I would play them stuff, or I just kept ...

The 2014 Solution Beat Battle Recap

Beauty Bar | Credit, Armando Geneyro

There are some events that remind us why hip-hop is so beautiful, and it’s not at all shocking that the latest said event was The 2014 Solution Beat Battle. Producers are generally some humble and nice m’fuckers, bottom line, and a room full of them and their supporters made for a happy, buoyant occasion. Though the friendly atmosphere was omnipresent, that’s not what made the event worthwhile. It was the level of talent that blew us away. The 12 beatmakers were diverse in style and execution, each obviously hungry for the win, and every single one of them had a chance. If you missed it, allow me to explain the tragedy of doing so. Seeing producers, who generally stay behind the scenes, dance energetically and sometimes awkwardly to their own music is something that can never be recreated with words. They break their necks and punch their fists at various intervals, punctuating the drops, samples, and drums that they know like the back ...

Sadat X, El Da Sensei, Qwel & Maker, and more at Cervantes’ Other Side

Cervantes' Other Side | 2.3.14 | Credit, Armando Geneyro

I mean, who wants to go to a show on a Monday night ever, much less the Monday night after the Broncos succumbed to one of the nastiest losses of their season, Superbowl XLVIII. Well, in this case, the Monday night show turned out to be just the kind of medicine that everyone in attendance desperately needed. The line-up was largely Colorado names, mixed with dash of old and new school national. The sound at Cervantes’ Other Side has become a favorite in town, which, when combined with the green leniency, new patio, and removal of the fucking death stair by the bar, boosts this venue to the top of the list of best places to catch a hip-hop show in Denver. The crowd was thin, as expected, at the Other Side, but the show started with a clean set by ODX. These three well-versed emcees (Lukeskyy, Ceejay Franchize and Leezy) were backed by the increasingly skilled Mikey Fresh on ...

Weekend Planning: Art shows, Birthdays and Hip-Hop

gutterkidsedit

If we can just make it through the week, this weekend is looking to be a good one. Of course, I’m a little biased, because this is my birthday weekend. Coincidentally, there are some really great events that will be going down that I wanted to highlight.  As always, check out the HHRC calendar to pre-plan your weekend. Friday Chubby Robot has become synonymous with the innovative and awesome events he throws. Much like his 8bit Video Game show, his latest show, Gutter Kids, inspired by the Garbage Pail Kids is yet again setting the bar for creative and fun events. Opt Won, the curator knows his events speak for themselves. “Anything I do with Chubby Robot, I try to make sure it is so unique no one will ever be able to duplicate it.” This event, which goes down Friday, August 2nd at Buffalo Exchange (51 Broadway) from 6-11 p.m. features many artists interpretations of themselves as a “Gutter ...
