Fresh Pressed: Dos Beats, Mr. Midas, U.T.I.C.A., Molina Speaks, and Don Verse

image

This week, like every other, there’s plenty of new music from our lovable pack of Colorado hip-hop misfits. Today, we have three new videos from familiar names and faces as well as a new beat tape and a single from a name and voice you may not have heard before. Dos Beats – Cassette One This mellow 10-minute pleaser by Dos is a great one to kick back and spark up to. U.T.I.C.A. – “Ain’t No Ni99a Like Me” This hyphy track and matching video by none-other than, Jeremy Pape, takes place in the sin capital of Las Vegas and definitely captures the spirit. U.T.I.C.A. has one of those mesmerizing voices, that make most tracks worth a listen, or seven. Molina Speaks – “Lilwakalifamane (ft. Black Actors Guild)” Molina is as captivating on screen as on the mic, with his shy smile and thick wit. This video says almost as much as the deep track. Mr. Midas – “Ask About ...

Collective Culture – Culture Over Currency

cultureovercurrency

We first mentioned Collective Culture last week, and today they dropped their big project, the one they have been hyping for weeks. Culture Over Currency vol. 1 is a cypher with seven Colorado emcees (in order of appearance) FL, Turner Jackson, Trev Rich, Mr. Midas, Hustle Man, AP, and Koo Qua. The goal that Collective Culture had by bringing all these emcees together, many who rep separate crews, was to “promote Denver talent the way that we see fit.” Though the cypher has been done many times, The Culture Over Currency video still feels fresh. The visuals look good, filmed in a sweet location (Ink Monstr office) by knowledgeable film peeps (Jeremy Pape, Derek Reinhardt and Fa’al Yamin Ali) which makes for a professional appearance. The tight shots of the emcee’s mouths add dimension and the varied camera angles, even more depth. The sound on the other hand wasn’t quite as great. The lofty ceiling, empty office, or both caused ...

Colorado Hip-Hop Track Benefits Sandy Hook Survivors

Faith In Change2

With negativity and tragedy becoming an everyday occurrence it’s easy to become numb to it and chalk it up to a cruel world. Colorado MC, singer and producer, Paul Junior decided to actually do something about it. He put together a heavy-hitting roster of Colorado artists to create a track that aims to not only touch the hearts of those affected by the recent tragedies, but also assist them financially. The track, “Faith In Change” (below) costs a measly $1 to download, but 100% of the proceeds will be donated to healingnewtown.org, an organization that aims to heal the community of Newton through the power of art. Appropriate, right? We took a moment to find out some of the details of how this project came together from Paul Junior. HipHopRollCall.com: I assume the Sandy Hook shooting hit home with you to inspire putting together a project like this. How did the idea come about? Paul Junior: Sandy Hook just hit me hard because of ...

Top Of Da Boxx Revives the Video Show

todb

Remember back when video shows were the best way to find out about new music? Glued to the TV we’d watch our favorite MCs in action while hoping that we’d find our new favorite artist in the same episode. The video show has all but died on television, but is still live and well via YouTube, and Colorado hip-hop now has sound representation in this media form. The self proclaimed, “Hardest working videographer in Colorado,” 8ight Tha Sk8 of Clearview Films and Colorado hip-hop mainstay, Nyke Nitti have come together to create Top of Da Boxx. This video show, hosted by Nyke, intends on dropping new and fresh videos each Thursday at noon. The format as it stands today allows for new videos, guest interviews and viewer voting on which videos move on to the countdown episodes. The “set” is about as informal as it gets, putting the guests at ease in the anything-goes-atmosphere. The comfort stops there though, because ...

Fresh Pressed: Shae Money, Mane Rok, A.V.I.U.S., Mr. Midas, Myke Charles and Haven

fresh-pressed

Just over a week into the new year brought with it a variety of new Colorado hip-hop music.  Not one track sounds the same stylistically, but each and every one has at least one feature – some with four.  Though obviously a smart promotional move to release singles that roll deep in the feature department, it would be nice to get a taste of the artist’s individual abilities in order to properly anticipate the upcoming project. Here’s what we have for you this week: Shae Money featuring SP Double, Black Milk, Guilty Simpson and Phil Da Agony – “Premeditated” The first single of Shae Money’s forthcoming album, FRE3STYLE (Mixed by Statik Selektah) is definitely just an appetizer, a delicious one.  This star-studded cast is set off by a simple yet completely enticing beat. Mane Rok, Rhias, A.V.I.U.S., ES Nine and Riley Boone – “New Beginning” This new joint was released at the first of the year for obvious reasons.  This refreshing track features fresh flows ...

The 20 Sexiest in Colorado Hip-Hop

sexiest

Hip-hop is, and always has been, as much about the art of style as a culture of expression. Rappers, deejays, producers and the like are tasked with being ahead of trends, maintaining an artful stature, and executing innovative ideas, all while looking good. Here in Denver, the city is growing steadily into a metropolis of music led by some of the dopest rhyme writers and sound creators. It just so happens to be that many of them are great to look at. If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, we like what we see. Happy New Year, here’s the 20 sexiest hip-hop aficionados in the town. Myke Charles –Beyond the fact that he can sing effortlessly and rap like a word fiend, Myke Charles’ swag is through the roof. His posture is almost presidential, his appearance above reproach and his smile, devastating. Myke’s new record Flight Plan is coming out in early January. Check for it. Thank us ...

Sound Off: Mr. Midas

Mr Midas Son of The Crack Era

In this edition of Sound Off I had the pleasure of chop’n it up with Mr. Midas, who just happens to be down at the lab doing some feature work for an upcoming project that I am working on.  Midas had some direct views on a few things and shared a few personal details with me… 800:  I appreciate you taking the time to chat with me after the session. Midas:   Not a problem, ya know we go way back.  You were one of the 1st 20 people that I really let know I was serious about my craft when I moved to Colorado (actually, I hopped off the plane and met ya’ll shortly after that).  Ya know me man… I get in where I fit in.  I try to show love to everybody and hopefully, I try to get that love back so when I get on some crazy wicked shit, from frontin’ what I do, it seems to ...
