BC One Crowns Denver Champion

Red Bull is the city’s new saving grace. The various off-shoots of the mammoth brand have been scattering Denver’s recent months with transcendent events. Red Bull Sound Select shows have been consistently thrilling for even the most jaded among us, and the Red Bull BC One Cypher on July 6th was no different. Eyebrows were raised when Boettcher Hall, the upscale venue housed in the Denver Performing Arts Complex, was announced as the site for the B-Boy battle. The juxtaposition wound up being perfect- poetic even. Everyone there was a hip-hop enthusiast to say the least, and the legitimacy that Boettcher lent on Saturday night felt like just dues. There was a red carpet that led all the way from the street to the glass doors of the Hall; we walked it in our Adidas. The circular stage most often peppered with the black ensembles of orchestra members was turned into a straight spectacle. The exuberance of the competitors was ...

Red Bull Sound Select Presents Dirty Science and more

If you’ve been to the Red Bull Sound Select shows this year, then you know the magic of them. They started with a bang as Bun B performed his first ever show in Colorado. He ate up the Marquis stage, performing hit after hit with a huge grin and endless charisma. The second show was headlined by Vic Mensa, an unstoppable young force whose creative energy and style is unlike anything we’ve seen from both his predecessors and contemporaries. The additional beauty of these Red Bull events is in the home state inclusiveness. DJ Low Key, the shows’ curator, deftly compliments the headliners with the best Colorado has to offer. The ReMINDers and FL (all Red Bull Sound Select artists themselves) supported Bun B with their signature enthusiasm and flavor, respectively. Keeping with Vic Mensa’s abstract content and trance-inducing production, CRL CRRLL and BLKHRTS both absolutely stunned the crowd with their sets.  Many artists and fans love to wax poetic about not being ...

Hip-Hop Town Hall Meeting One

town hall

This past Thursday, Colorado hip-hop ambassadors, Mike Wird and Ru Black hosted the city’s first Hip-Hop Town Hall meeting. The event was held at Cold Crush, one of the Denver’s hottest spots. There was a pretty good turnout for a trial run. Five Roots Breaks Down the Organization, Starting at the Roots

Five Roots Logo

Recently a group of musically talented Denverites formed their own non-profit organization called Five Roots. Named in part for the roots they’ve put down in the Five Points neighborhood, the group’s aim is to bring underprivileged school children opportunities that wouldn’t otherwise be available to them. Five Roots aims to offer everything from school supplies, to field trips to Elitch’s. Five Roots is set apart from many other charity organizations particularly in their creative and effective fundraising ideas. They host networking mixers in the form of speed dating, for those involved in the music and entertainment community here in Denver. They also throw free dance parties (with a donation box at the door). Five Roots incorporates fun, and provides networking and growth opportunities in exchange for an opportunity to improve the community. You undoubtedly are familiar with at least some of the names of the innovative and charitable few that started this organization, as they’re all heavily involved in the ...

Colorado hip-hop homestead Bboy Factory robbed in ungrateful new trend

Though there is much positivity and beauty that can be found in hip-hop, there is the other side, the darker one. In a culture that was born in oppression, as a response to unfair treatment there are always those that will continue to rebel, even destroy, and often the targets are the wrong ones. When those supporting and curating the movement are the victims of robbery, there’s nothing to feel but anger and injustice. Last Tuesday (March 18), local bboy studio, The Bboy Factory was robbed of their sound system and more. Their losses include, turntables, speakers, amplifier, mixer, TV, cash register, some merchandise and art supplies.  The studio which provides classes, parties and a safe place to let loose charges next to nothing for use of the facility, so a loss like this is devastating. A Go Fund account has been set up to help counteract the costs of replacing the equipment so that they can continue to support the ...

Babah Fly’s Track Goes Pro With GoWorld Project

Hip-hop is often mistaken for a simple flat-line effort. People think it’s just mediocre poetry recited over a solid beat. What they fail to realize is that hip-hop has always been on the come-up, and always will be. The world sleeps on the genre, but it’s almost comatose when it comes to the efforts from the Mile High city. It’s time to wake up. Things are changing on the Denver front with many organizations beginning to scope out the talent here. Recently, local hip-hop artist Babah Fly became a hot commodity on an international tip. Babah Fly has been in the game for quite some time, working with groups like Fly4Wird and The High Tops, and his efforts are definitely paying off. The GoWorld Project and Sketch Skateboards got together to create a GOPRO Skateboards montage and approached him with the opportunity of a lifetime. Having peeped a sample of his music in an earlier graffiti video, a representative for ...

Collective Culture – Culture Over Currency

We first mentioned Collective Culture last week, and today they dropped their big project, the one they have been hyping for weeks. Culture Over Currency vol. 1 is a cypher with seven Colorado emcees (in order of appearance) FL, Turner Jackson, Trev Rich, Mr. Midas, Hustle Man, AP, and Koo Qua. The goal that Collective Culture had by bringing all these emcees together, many who rep separate crews, was to “promote Denver talent the way that we see fit.” Though the cypher has been done many times, The Culture Over Currency video still feels fresh. The visuals look good, filmed in a sweet location (Ink Monstr office) by knowledgeable film peeps (Jeremy Pape, Derek Reinhardt and Fa’al Yamin Ali) which makes for a professional appearance. The tight shots of the emcee’s mouths add dimension and the varied camera angles, even more depth. The sound on the other hand wasn’t quite as great. The lofty ceiling, empty office, or both caused ...

The Art Of Records III: Enter The Marauders

The Art of Records is everything that’s right with the Denver hip-hop scene; impeccable taste in music, unparalleled art, skilled DJs, and a luminous crowd. During the first two Art of Records nights we were treated to artwork honoring B.I.G., Dilla, Blu, MF Doom, Camp Lo, Mos Def and many more. The third installment of this noteworthy event goes down tonight at The Meadowlark. Artists will be paying homage to two of hip-hop’s all-time best albums, A Tribe Called Quest’s Midnight Marauders & Wu-Tang Clan’s Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). 11/9/13 marks the 20th anniversary of both albums’ release, a seemingly impossible gift from the throwback hip-hop gods. Our Denver artists will use the album and 12″ single record covers as inspiration, creating re-imaginings of the iconic original artwork. The doors open at 7 in order to display the artwork in full light, then The Solution afterparty kicks off at 10. Its 21+ and there’s no cover until 11 so get there early ...

Infinite Mindz: A Happy Ending

Infinite Mindz was a favorite of many critics and heads alike in 2007, but their unceremonious and amiable breakup left a void in their wake. But today, with the release of their first single [see the video below the fold] as Infinite Mindz reunited, a new chapter is opened in this group’s musical biography. But before we can rejoice in the reunion of this once loved Colorado staple, a history lesson is in order.  We talked with D-Kno about the evolution of this eclectic group and he told us a story that is so easy to relate with that we had to share. The Beginning Infinite Mindz started out as Miz Logik, Frankie Figgz, and D-Kno, but when they dropped their first album in 2007,  Monkey Rebellion Musik it was only Frankie Figgz and D-Kno fully representing for the group. However their first album, which was produced by Coagulated Recylces,  boasted many other well known features like, Spoke in Wordz, O.N.E. ...
