Fresh Pressed: Molina, Ill Se7en, Trayce Chapman, Pries and more

fresh pressed

Molina Speaks – “Color Blind” (ft. Ill Se7en & Lannie Shelton Produced by DJ Icewater) Nice to hear hip-hop that is representative of current social issues. Molina and Ill Seven with Lannie Shelton do a good job per usual staying true to their message. Trayce Chapman – “Clarity” (Produced by MJ Nichols) Nice track. Very laid back and the production is clean. The type of track you could sit back and smoke an L to and reflect on the day. Pries – “Waves” By far one of my favorite tracks on the playlist when it comes to lyrics. I liked how candid and telling the song came across. Simple but complex in its own right. Worth a listen. Black Pegasus and Tullie Rap – “BLVD” (ft. Lyrick) Dope beat, could definitely mess with it but as far as the lyrics go they come off pretty generic. Malachi Grant – “My Life” I dug the video but I really enjoyed the track. Very ...

Pries – Revenge Of The Nerd

revengeof the nerd

“Uh-Huhhhhhhhh!” Wake Up Drunk rapper, Pries, is back.  This time with a 19-track album titled Revenge of the Nerd, and he is back with a vengeance. Revenge of the Nerd dropped a little over a week ago on multiple sites and has already been downloaded over 11,000 times. This new project reflects his musical abilities while combining smooth, R&B vocals, precise beats, and a stylistic lyrical cadence. All of these facets making this release extremely difficult to pass up. Pries mixes a variety of tempos and styles to form a versatile sound that appeals to his fans. The emcee embodies Colorado new era hip-hop with his laid-back style with rugged undertones. He also features a few Colorado artists including, friend, and fellow Squizzy Gang artist, Trev Rich, on a track called “Wish You Would.” Of course, it wouldn’t be a Pries album without a couple of club bangers like “Pour Some More” and turn-up certified, “Willie Bandana.” Pries showcases his multifaceted style ...

Pries – Cold Rose

coldrose

Pries is coming for heads on this new album. Not only has the MC mastered an ear for beat selection and lyrical prowess, the young artist narrowed his content for this project. Opening up with “Stairway to Heaven,” Pries recites the Lord’s Prayer in a chopped and screwed tone that is well placed and timed. Cold Rose is a glimpse into a less introspective Pries. We usually find the MC lamenting about his life and experienced. This time, though, we hear the growth in his rap skill, rhyme structure and brevity in approach. No long drawn out tracks about wishing on stars and hoping for dreams, the album is chock full of motivation and persistence. Check for “Roses,” and “JoyRich” for some spectacular beat composition and rhyme slanging. Pries is a storyteller by nature and in what might be the first time in a long while, he uses that talent in ways that suit him first. One of the best ...

Kid Vegas – No More Silence Vol. 1

kidvegascover

Kid Vegas is a pretty good rapper. He has a distinguishable voice and booming presence. His personality is warm and inviting and he knows how to move a crowd with fervor. To that end, his latest record No More Silence Vol. 1 is a catastrophic example of what the Denver rapper can do. The album is so sparse in substance, content and listen-ability it’s unfair. Opening with a strange intro wherein the speaker is implored to “stop bull-shitting,” the interlude doesn’t bode well for the rest of the record. “All On Me,” a “trap music” beat, (a genre that is single-handedly proving people will listen to and consume anything as trendy) is spastic, scattered and so forgettable it’s hard to determine exactly what Vegas is rapping about. With a title like No More Silence we expect grandiose statements, or watershed moments of artistic recognition. Kid Vegas does not deliver. From a production standpoint (usually one of Vegas’ strong suits) the beats are surprisingly watered ...

Colorado Hip-Hop Had the Best Year Ever

jan2013-feat

‘Tis the season for list after list glorifying artists that were the “best” of the past year.  Rather than jumping on that bandwagon we decided to go about it a little differently. Remember the VH1 show “The Best Week Ever”?   Probably not, but regardless  2012 was a big year for many Colorado artists but there were several names that continued to pop up on marquees, in magazines or blogs and repetitively sounding off in our headphones.  Following, in no particular order are the artists that we couldn’t stop hearing about, and from the looks of it, 2012 was their best year ever. Editors Note: If you have any suggestions or people you think we missed please leave their info in the comments section.  Mid-month we will write a follow up piece, if necessary, with any we may have forgotten. The Foodchain The Foodchain is no doubt reveling in the success that 2012 brought for them.  At SXSW last March they ...
