Fresh Pressed: Aires Jackson, BLKHRTS, Spoke In Wordz, SP Double, Pries and Air Dubai

image

Another big week in Colorado hip-hop so yet again we will do a  duel Fresh Pressed. Today we’ll go through some of the new videos that just dropped, and Friday we’ll list the tracks. As always, please feel free to sound off on what you think. Aires Jackson – “So Sick Boi” The crisp and clean visuals that accompany Aires Jackson’s new single, “So Sick Boi” were put together by the McReynolds Brothers, who recently also directed and produced BLKHRTS’ video for “Pure, Pitch Black” and their latest single (see below). The brothers behind the camera do an amazing job at executing a story line while the brothers in front of it are  natural performers. Lenny Lenn and James Ray spit so nice in this one, accentuated by the nasty beat by Qknox, making this track one of their best yet. Don’t believe us, check it yourself. BLKHRTS – “BRK T M (Bark At Me)” Speaking of BLKHRTS, their latest video for ...

The Battleground

knk

BREAKING: Colorado has a battle scene. It’s been skulking around in Aurora, slangin’ disses, importing high quality product from big out-of-town names, and not giving a fuck that it’s under your radar. I infiltrated the camp recently to find out if it’s worth more attention than local fans, artists, and press alike, have been giving it. (Spoiler alert, it is). It’s reflective of the battle culture at large that Colorado’s scene is so segregated from everything else hip-hop around here; the popular events, the coverage, the bigger rap names, the larger crowds, etc. Historically big business has struggled to commodify battling as effectively as they have virtually every other aspect of the movement. The industry has created a climate in which “Rapper” is a Halloween costume and graffiti is reduced to a damn font, but battling has remained largely unbridled. Now, both nationally and locally, there is a gradual restructuring and resurgence of this element thanks largely to the anarchy ...

Infinite Mindz: A Happy Ending

Dkno

Infinite Mindz was a favorite of many critics and heads alike in 2007, but their unceremonious and amiable breakup left a void in their wake. But today, with the release of their first single [see the video below the fold] as Infinite Mindz reunited, a new chapter is opened in this group’s musical biography. But before we can rejoice in the reunion of this once loved Colorado staple, a history lesson is in order.  We talked with D-Kno about the evolution of this eclectic group and he told us a story that is so easy to relate with that we had to share. The Beginning Infinite Mindz started out as Miz Logik, Frankie Figgz, and D-Kno, but when they dropped their first album in 2007,  Monkey Rebellion Musik it was only Frankie Figgz and D-Kno fully representing for the group. However their first album, which was produced by Coagulated Recylces,  boasted many other well known features like, Spoke in Wordz, O.N.E. ...

Battle: JMoney vs. Spoke-In-Wordz

spokejmoneycover

Battle rapping these days is a whole new ball game, but it is taken very seriously and has a strong following both physically and virtually.  As a completely separate entity in the rap world, it’s a business, and its structure is sound and people are getting rich off of it (but this is a discussion for another article). What sets today’s battles apart from the bouts we remember is that they are a capella, filmed (for youtube) and are pre-written and researched. It is not uncommon to hear Facebook or Twitter status references as well as other personal information about the opponent. Delivery is irrelevant in these battles, instead the focus is on the content, namely punchlines. Despite how we feel about what battle rapping has evolved into, it does require skill and is still damn entertaining. The match up of Spoke-in-Wordz, notorious Colorado hip-hop staple and JMoney, practiced battle rapper came to fruition after Spoke lost the 900lb Gorilla ...

Sound Off: J Money

Jmoneybattle

One love and many blessnz to all. This edition of Sound Off, I got the pleasure of sitting down with an individual that has learned that there are many ways to achieve success in the rap game, without even hittin’ the studio…  The one and only, J Money from Dub Treys. With that said, let’s Sound Off! 800:  Your story is a lil’ different from a lot of other artists.  What I mean is, a lot of  artists concentrate on recording albums, doing shows, videos and so on…  You have found a new vein for success with rap here in Colorado.  Put us up on game and what you’ve been doing lately? J Money:  It’s Battle Rap!  The way I did it was I started looking at it from a business stand point.  I realized that there is such a strong hold by the media on industry music, it’s controlled by six white men (that’s just real).  Lincoln Financial owns ...
