Fresh Pressed: Ichiban, InkLine, Mane Rok, Turner Jackson, Jiggy Thompson and more

fresh pressed

Phew, this week packs some heat. Hear for yourself. Ichiban, InkLine & Mane Rok  – “Mr. Hyde” produced by Shae Money Imagine four Geminis together in the same studio, probably feels like eight people, especially in this track, which is a play on the “other” personality.  “Mr. Hyde” is the first release of Geminii dropped on Mane Rok’s birthday (5/21), and they will hopefully continue this trend with a release on each of their birthdays, Ichiban (5/28), Shae Money (6/7) and InkLine (6/20). Turner Jackson featuring Lily Fangz – “Us Kids” produced by Broken TJ is the master of growth and reinvention, and this track showcases a fairly new sound for the emcee. Lily Fangz handles the almost ad-lib hook and Broken provides the heady beat. Jiggy Thompson featuring Rolphy and Typhy- “Can’t Hold Us Back” This beat is just plain fun, and you can tell the three emcees enjoyed rocking to it. Perfect Friday happy music. Don Blas – “Amen” The visuals ...

Inkmonstr Free4All Volume 4 Recap

2014 Free 4 All _445

[Editor’s Note: Unfortunately none of our staff could make the raved about Free4All, but luckily Sean Marquantte was willing to share his talents with our audience. Check out his write up and photos of the event.] Now that cannabis is  legal in Colorado, there was no doubt that this would change the outside view of Colorado and the thoughts of Marijuana as a whole. Whether this is a good thing or bad thing is a personal preference, however, even as a person who does not smoke, I see this changing Colorado for good on many different levels. While being allowed the opportunity to be a photographer for Hip Hop Roll Call at the Inkmonstr Free4All event hosted by Redman (Reggie Nobel) with performances by A$AP Ferg, Ghostface Killa and more, I left wondering if attendees thought this was in fact a free concert for the adult crowd (event was 21+) or a marijuana convention with live music. Let me explain what I mean. ...

Collective Culture – Culture Over Currency

cultureovercurrency

We first mentioned Collective Culture last week, and today they dropped their big project, the one they have been hyping for weeks. Culture Over Currency vol. 1 is a cypher with seven Colorado emcees (in order of appearance) FL, Turner Jackson, Trev Rich, Mr. Midas, Hustle Man, AP, and Koo Qua. The goal that Collective Culture had by bringing all these emcees together, many who rep separate crews, was to “promote Denver talent the way that we see fit.” Though the cypher has been done many times, The Culture Over Currency video still feels fresh. The visuals look good, filmed in a sweet location (Ink Monstr office) by knowledgeable film peeps (Jeremy Pape, Derek Reinhardt and Fa’al Yamin Ali) which makes for a professional appearance. The tight shots of the emcee’s mouths add dimension and the varied camera angles, even more depth. The sound on the other hand wasn’t quite as great. The lofty ceiling, empty office, or both caused ...

Turner Jackson – Black Electric Love

BlackElectric Love

To Turner Jackson, Black Electric Love is more than the title of his latest project. It’s a sentiment, a state of mind and a place of eclectic freedom. The rapping phenom is known for his dizzying rhymes and ability to freestyle at the drop of a hat. For this latest release Jackson is employing more of a rhythm to his madness, along with showing off his extraordinary knack for choosing incredible beats. The single “Figure it Out,” is drenched in the production of a live saxophone while Turner almost sings his lyrics, and it’s quite good. Nine tracks long, Turner Jackson jumps right in with an almost reintroduction to who he is an evolved MC. “Welcome to the D.O.P.E. Game,” the name of his crew and arguably one of the best songs on the album is lyrically, the sweet spot for Turner. He basks in the glow of the Infamous Jones produced track and lets his rhymes do most of the slaughtering. ...

Fresh Pressed: Mr Dubblup, Turner Jackson

image

Just a couple of videos to send you into your weekend on this Fresh Pressed Friday, but the irony of having them in the same post does not escape us. Check ’em both out to understand what that means… Mr Dubblup – “Bang Bang” Aptly titled, Mr Dubblup is taking aim at the CO rap scene and busting off a couple warning shots in that direction. Though he doesn’t name specific names, he drops some overt subliminals (that oxymoron will make sense when you hear the track). The video is understated with the obvious intention of letting the lyrics shine. You feelin’ it? Drop a comment and let us know. Turner Jackson – “Figure it Out” Meanwhile Mr. Turner Jackson ain’t worried ’bout nothin’. The new visuals for his Dynohunter-produced single “Figure it Out,” of course come courtesy of Jeremy Pape as another D.O.P.E. Game classic in the making. Check out TJ getting supremely cakey amongst some choice lighting and visual effects. ...

The Rap-A-Thon Class of 2013

rapathon2013

On August 30, 2013 history was made. Dozens of MCs congregated at The Savoy (2700 Arapahoe) to spit the longest non-stop cypher that Denver has ever seen (heard), and they did it. From 8 p.m. (sharp) to close to midnight, MCs rapped, periodically passing the mic to the next eager rhymer. From writtens to freestyles, we heard a lot of stories over the course of the night, but all of them legitimate, as novices and veterans alike each had their turn on the mic. The overall vibe of the evening matched the classy ambiance of The Savoy’s ballroom – beautiful. Like any yearbook session, many didn’t show up on picture day, but those that did offered their favorite line delivered that evening.   The emcee’s energy was palpable as they passed the mic around the cypher. Each emcee completely different from one another with the same passion and drive.           The party people were just as ...

As one of the summer’s important close out shows, The Savoy, a premier ballroom in Curtis Park will be filled with dozens of MCs, a bunch of live painters and numerous vendors and local designers displaying and selling their wares. The idea of the rap-a-thon is to create the longest running rhyme cypher that Denver has ever heard. The event is hosted by Ru Black and Lizzy Brodie, and at 8 p.m., the  rappers will begin to spit. There are no rules other than keeping the cypher rolling.  DJs Dozen, Vacho and Squizzy Taylor will keep the beats hot while the MCs throw down. With over 50 rappers confirmed, there has never been an event like this. The list of heavy-hitters includes: ...
