Fresh Pressed: Asphate, Ritual of Ether, Rolphy, U.T.I.C.A. and more

fresh pressed

ASPHATE (G4-CSR) – “Like So” The first single off his solo LP this is definitely a stand out track styled with a wonderfully classic beat paired with listen worthy lyrics. Ritual of Ether – “Devil Bitch” This track is somewhere between electro/dubstep and Hip Hop/Rap/Horrorcore. Whatever it is I am feeling it. Definitely something new when it comes to Hip-Hop. Rolphy – “You and I” The song “You and I” by Rolphy carries some heavy content with subject matter that speaks on addiction and denial. The production quality is not great but somehow seems to add to the tone of the track. U.T.I.C.A. – “KILL EM ALL” – ft. Ladyy Chelaa & Koo Qua This track could definitely find its way on to my playlist. It is not super unique but I have to give a shout out to Ladyy Chelaa and Koo Qua. It is always refreshing to hear talented female emcees especially from the local scene where there is not nearly ...

Fresh Pressed: DJ Lazy Eyez, Tommy Brown, Ill Se7en, Aklock, Eddie Knolls, and more

fresh pressed

In today’s catch up edition we have a grip of new music, mostly singles, one mixtape and one EP. (We placed them in the order we thought they would be the most enjoyable to you, our beloved audience.) Tommy Brown – “Intro Music” The new track off Welcome to the D.O.P.E. Game player, Tommy Brown’s forthcoming project, Covered In Gold 24k definitely fits the assumed(though misleading) meaning of the collective. Trap to a tee, Tommy is definitely engaging, albeit repetitive.  “Intro Music” drops out mid way through and switches it up with beat and speed, which added an element of interest to the single. Ill Se7en – “New Jack City” In a complete change of pace, both on this playlist and for Ill Se7en, “New Jack City” features a crispy Mikey Fresh beat that forces the emcee to break out of his groove a bit. The joint is extremely likable and bears replaying, though the Nino Brown line at the end distracts from the uniqueness due to the familiarity from ...

Spyda T.E.K.

spydatek

When and how did you get your start DJing? My mom told me that ever since I was in diapers I was VERY MUCH into music, that being said, growing up I was really inspired & amazed by what the dj’s were doing with the music played on the radio. I knew they were using records but since at the time I didn’t have access to a pair, I started “djing” using two boomboxes when I was 8 yrs old…no joke! How’d you pick your name? I was given the name “Spyda-Man” when I was a freshman in HS then I’ll say, about mid semester of my sophomore year I tried to change it to “Dj TEK” but I didn’t feel like it fit so I just combined both the old & the new then BOOM! “Spyda-T.E.K” What was your first set-up? Two Pairs of horrible Gemini turntables & an equally terrible mixer…I think Numark. What’s your current set-up? Two Technics ...

Fresh Pressed: AG Flux, A.V.I.U.S, Cannonball Soup, Sole, Planes! and more

image

What is so cool about the Colorado hip-hop community is that not a week passes without some new, extremely shareworthy music being released. I mean, that in itself speaks volumes of the scene, shit, that doesn’t happen on a national level. That said, here we are, Friday again with three new music videos, a single and a one-of-a-kind SXSW recap. AG Flux & A.V.I.U.S. feat. Sharelle- “Water Under the Bridge” The video for a single off of the pair’s EP, How Cliche, was shot and directed by Paul Junior. The visuals for this slick track include an attempt at a layered narrative, but unfortunately the concept went over our heads. Cannonball Soup (Kontrast & Fo Chief) – “Bars” The razor tongued, Fresh Breath Committee spin off, Cannonball Soup have something brewing as they’ve been dropping a bunch of gems recently. The latest, “Bars,” is as clever as it is quick, luckily they include the lyrics on their soundcloud page so you don’t ...

Collective Culture – Culture Over Currency

cultureovercurrency

We first mentioned Collective Culture last week, and today they dropped their big project, the one they have been hyping for weeks. Culture Over Currency vol. 1 is a cypher with seven Colorado emcees (in order of appearance) FL, Turner Jackson, Trev Rich, Mr. Midas, Hustle Man, AP, and Koo Qua. The goal that Collective Culture had by bringing all these emcees together, many who rep separate crews, was to “promote Denver talent the way that we see fit.” Though the cypher has been done many times, The Culture Over Currency video still feels fresh. The visuals look good, filmed in a sweet location (Ink Monstr office) by knowledgeable film peeps (Jeremy Pape, Derek Reinhardt and Fa’al Yamin Ali) which makes for a professional appearance. The tight shots of the emcee’s mouths add dimension and the varied camera angles, even more depth. The sound on the other hand wasn’t quite as great. The lofty ceiling, empty office, or both caused ...

Turner Jackson – Black Electric Love

BlackElectric Love

To Turner Jackson, Black Electric Love is more than the title of his latest project. It’s a sentiment, a state of mind and a place of eclectic freedom. The rapping phenom is known for his dizzying rhymes and ability to freestyle at the drop of a hat. For this latest release Jackson is employing more of a rhythm to his madness, along with showing off his extraordinary knack for choosing incredible beats. The single “Figure it Out,” is drenched in the production of a live saxophone while Turner almost sings his lyrics, and it’s quite good. Nine tracks long, Turner Jackson jumps right in with an almost reintroduction to who he is an evolved MC. “Welcome to the D.O.P.E. Game,” the name of his crew and arguably one of the best songs on the album is lyrically, the sweet spot for Turner. He basks in the glow of the Infamous Jones produced track and lets his rhymes do most of the slaughtering. ...

image

…And it don’t stop. Summer might be winding down but Colorado hip-hop is intent on churning out greatness all year round. Check out what’s new in this edition of Fresh Pressed Friday. Big House ft Ace – “Snazzy” The track sounds like a proper hip-hop Sunday in the mile high, and the video (shot by Jeremy Pape) was built to match, teaming with the Welcome to the D.O.P.E. Game crew, naturally. Mane Rok and Xencs L. Wing – “Follow Me” While Lotus is a big name nationally, if they’re not on your radar (yet) it’s likely because they’re an electro-jamband. However their new project Monks, showcases their take on hip-hop. They employ the talents of legendary lyricists like Lyrics Born, Gift of Gab, Mr. Lif…and Mane Rok and Xencs L. Wing. Get a taste: An Hobbes – Diary of a Space Cadet 2 September 9th saw An Hobbes deliver his trademark nerd-hop with the release of his latest album, Diary of a Space Cadet ...
